Stacey mentioned she now meets so many of her neighbours since she planted a vegie patch out the front. I'm awaiting a cookbook I ordered: The Classic Zucchini Cookbook. Very handy when there's a glut of zucchini (also has pumpkin recipes I'll use for my 22 pumpkins I harvested from two plants)Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12898379481816853974noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5727042822012846563.post-29313070508243320602011-05-12T10:17:21.980+10:002011-05-12T10:17:21.980+10:00Wow, Sarah, that is fantastic. I wish I could have been there.

Living in the Adelaide hills I'm now starting to connect with my neighbours through local produce. My plot is in the back corner of the property and backs onto two other properties who also have their plots against the fence.

Often we are out 'tending' at the same time and this year discovered that we were all growing zucchinis. We agreed that next year we will coordinate better so we grow different stuff so we can swap while we tend, instead of just comparing size!

Congratulations again, I'm glad it was such a success!Nataliehttp://www.nataliejepotts.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5727042822012846563.post-31607418532995301372011-03-20T21:00:17.286+11:002011-03-20T21:00:17.286+11:00Your meal suggestion sounds lovely! I think the Saphire was good for a variety of uses, including mashing.
Technically, you probably could get potatoes from the supermarket but I'd opt for an organic supplier. It is true that potato farmers "knock the tops off" potato plants by spraying them with poison so the potato stops growing before harvest. Guess where the poison is sucked into? The tuber. This also stops the potato from growing ears when we take it home, so some supermarket potatoes last for ages in the light without growing ears. That's not normal.Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12898379481816853974noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5727042822012846563.post-75583159253398300412011-03-20T13:58:02.825+11:002011-03-20T13:58:02.825+11:00Could you mash the saphire? Can you use potatoes from the supermarket, because they do sprout, but someone did tell me that they have been poisoned to stop them from growing. So perhaps not something you want to use?Nataliehttp://www.nataliejepotts.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5727042822012846563.post-59856697742207064082011-02-22T11:41:17.680+11:002011-02-22T11:41:17.680+11:00Hi Keith

The drippers should work for vegies (I've seen the permie Josh Byrne use them on Gardening Australia) but the water doesn't really spread that far. I think my rows are too far apart (and they don't always have mulch on them, which should also help).
I've only got 2 rows for a bed about a metre wide. I think I need three rows. Drippers are 30cm apart, but you may need it closer with your sandy soil. I put the timer on for 2 hrs, which should mean 8 litres of water per dripper. I haven't double checked that I really get 8 litres.
However, garden bed is not dead!
SarahSarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12898379481816853974noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5727042822012846563.post-21548677537502154422011-02-22T11:10:21.552+11:002011-02-22T11:10:21.552+11:00Hi Sarah - good to see you Sunday on the PM stall....Hi Sarah - good to see you Sunday on the PM stall.
